LRL-Land Rover Lifestyle Magazine
Needs
- Quality high-end printing
- A fast and easy proof-to-print system for a multi-location based magazine team
When entrepreneur Doug Evilsizor, founder of Gallup, N.M.-based SlickRock Publishing, sought to launch a high-quality, national publication called Land Rover Lifestyle, he knew it wouldn't be a drive down easy street. As a first-time publisher with a limited budget, Evilsizor required a printing company that could provide expert advice and value throughout the process, and had advanced online technology solutions in place. By partnering with Darwill, Evilsizor was able to produce a high-quality magazine — on time and on budget.
Ideas
- BreezeWay™ - Darwill's web-based suite of prepress tools
- Stochastic screening
A key component was Darwill's BreezeWay system, a workflow solution that streamlines the prepress, proofing and printing processes. BreezeWay combines Darwill's special online job submission and proofing tools: Kodak's Prepare and InSite, respectively. The process begins with Prepare, an automated preflight and file preparation workflow that generates error-proof, print-ready PDF files with the quick click of a mouse. Once uploaded, InSite allows clients to annotate and proof these files from any location. This system allowed for collaborative efforts from entities in three different time zones – Evilsizor in New Mexico, the designer in Michigan, and Darwill in Illinois.
Darwill also recommended the use of 10-micron stochastic screening (equivalent to a 650 AM line screen) to best capture photographic details.
Outcomes
- Simplified, consistent delivery of a high-end magazine
- Top-notch graphic reproductions
With the new automated online system, a time-efficient, streamlined proofing and print process was achieved.
Plus, the stochastic printing resulted in greater detail, enhanced dimensional effect, smoother gradations and tints, and consistent color control.
Evilsizor was able to deliver a magazine with such top-notch photographic quality that subscribers often take out printed pages and frame them.
